At thirteen, friendships mean everything. They’re our backbone, our joy, our whole world. That is, until they’re not.

Leo (Eden Dambrine) and Remi (Gustav De Waele), two thirteen-year-olds, share an unbreakable bond until their friendship faces scrutiny from their peers, causing a growing distance between them. Eden Dambrine delivers a mesmerising performance, conveying a depth of emotion that belies his young age. His portrayal of the complexities of friendship and loss is nothing short of remarkable, drawing viewers into the heart of the narrative with every subtle expression and gesture. I read somewhere that director Lukas Dhont saw the young boy on a train speaking to his friends and thought he’d be the perfect fit for the character – he wasn’t wrong.

The cinematography is also brilliant, further enhances the film's impact, capturing the raw beauty and emotional intensity of each moment with breathtaking precision. And of course, credit must go to Dhont who’s direction is masterful as is his writing. As the story unfolds, Close immerses audiences in a world of unspoken pain and profound longing. It's a testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity, as well as the enduring power of genuine connection. Through its masterful storytelling and evocative imagery, the film invites viewers to confront their own vulnerabilities and reflect on the bonds that shape their lives.
